"Classics"

Lydia Mei 3/8/2019 As a student, I believe that we should read the "classics". That way students can be exposed to different types of literature. Students should be able to read the books that many people believe should be included in our curriculum. Reading the "classics" allow students to learn about the background and time period of the book. In the text it states "I firmly believe that reading "classics" gives one a perspective about what it means to be human that is hard to achieve otherwise." The "classics" will give students insight on the importance of literature. However sometimes the "classics" can be different to understand and read. The author states "Asking students to read books that they are unable to understand because of unfamiliar vocabulary, syntax, or underlying culture will almost surely ensure that they either won't read the books or that they won't learn what was intended by those who cho...

Lydia Mei 2/27/2019 Like Beowulf, J. R. R. Tolkien’s character Bilbo is “terrified of losing himself” and so rejects exile and embraces the warrior’s heroic code ( Anderson 226). Another work by Tolkien confronts the same issue: the character Frodo is told that he must resist going to a “cave, slowly to forget and to be forgotten” (365). Magazine covers are often overtly political. Take the example of Time magazine’s most recent issue, which featured three swinging orange wrecking balls with yellow hair. His family was from Maycomb County originally, his mother worked for a photographer in Meridian, had entered his picture in a Beautiful Child contest and won five dollars. The Underworld

Lydia Mei 2/11/2019 English The Greeks' belief in the underworld shows that they believe in a life after their time on Earth. The Underworld is known as the kingdom for the dead. After they die, everyone goes to the Underworld, where their soul can continue living. According to the article, there are four different regions in the Underworld, Tartarus, the Elysian Fields, the Field of Mourning and the Asphodel Meadows. Tartarus was where the worst souls went. The Elysian Fields was where only the most excellent men dwelled. The Field of Mourning were for those who were hurt by love. The Asphodel Meadows were for the souls of the ordinary people. Your soul lands in one of these regions depending on how you acted on Earth. Assuming everyone wanted to go to the Elysian Fields, this motivated people to do good on Earth. The Greek's belief in the underworld has similarities with Christianity. Both Christians and Greeks believed that you live on after death. However, in order fo...

The foundation literature from Greek literature dating back to the early Archaic period. The Illiad and the Odyssey are the two epic poems set in the Mycenaean era. These two epics along with the Homeric Hymns and the poems of Hesiod, Theogony and Works and Days, compromised the major foundations of the Greek literary tradition that would continue into the Classical, Hellenistic and Roman periods. The Greek culture influenced the Roman Empir...
