As a student, I believe that we should read the "classics". That way students can be exposed to different types of literature. Students should be able to read the books that many people believe should be included in our curriculum. Reading the "classics" allow students to learn about the background and time period of the book. In the text it states "I firmly believe that reading "classics" gives one a perspective about what it means to be human that is hard to achieve otherwise." The "classics" will give students insight on the importance of literature. However sometimes the "classics" can be different to understand and read. The author states "Asking students to read books that they are unable to understand because of unfamiliar vocabulary, syntax, or underlying culture will almost surely ensure that they either won't read the books or that they won't learn what was intended by those who chose them." That is why the teacher needs to make sure that they thoroughly explain everything to the students and answer all their questions about the literature. Reading the "classics" allows students to be prepared in life and school. In the text it states "Students who have read "classics" are better prepared for college literature classes, because they will have background knowledge of works that other writers refer to; without that background knowledge, a student's reading comprehension is compromised." If students are exposed to reading the "classics" at an early stage, they can understand references in college.
